TikTok Education is More Than Just Funny Videos

Published: 2019-10-25

TikTok — the video bite-sized video clips website somewhat akin to the now-defunct Vine, recently launched an education program in India, the first of its kind by the company.

The company says it is working with content creators in India to produce educational videos for the platform: that is, videos covering subjects like science, math, and language learning.

More from a recent Tech Crunch article:

It has partnered with edtech startups Vedantu,  Toppr,  Made Easy and Gradeup that will produce educational content for TikTok. It is also collaborating with social enterprises Josh Talks and the Nudge Foundation to mentor 5,000 people across India. (Some of the partnerships were disclosed a few months ago.)

An executive with Josh Talks said the firm has been able to reach more than 35 million users in less than two months on TikTok, far more users than it has attracted on other platforms.

According to Tech Crunch’s story, educational videos are among the most popular on the platform around the world. Over 10 million of them were made in recent months, garnering over 48 billion views.

This type of educational content is attractive to advertisers, too, ones which could help the TikTok Education initiative monetize itself.

Of course, this presents opportunities to integrators, not just as a case study or a secondary sales initiative, but as serious evidence that the classroom is becoming more and more about screens (and therefore, screen clarity).

Obviously I’m not suggesting that teachers are going to start handing over their pedagogical prerogatives to TikTok Education videos, but the fact that these videos are receiving so many views speaks to the idea that a modern classroom should have the power to clearly and instantly review such content.
