Mad Men Offers Glimpse at 1960s Office Technology

Telephone Technology — You don’t even hear the word “telephone” much in office settings these days, but in “Mad Men” days the phone was such an important piece of communication technology that it required management. Secretaries on the show are adept at transferring calls and in lieu of voicemail jotting down messages. During the first season the Sterling Cooper’s telephone operators were shown in a dedicated room. Yes, that’s Kristen Schaal (“Flight of the Concords,” “Last Man on Earth,” etc.) in the middle and Flo from the Progressive commercials (actress Stephanie Courtney) on the right. Crazy, right?
