Editor’s Note: This exclusive video interview with Planar comes out of Commercial Integrator’s Experiential Signage Deep Dive report.

Planar has long been a leader in direct-view LED, and pre-configured rectangular videowalls are one of its biggest categories. But not every installation calls for a simple rectangle. LED may need to wrap around doorways, architectural elements, corners or curves, or clients might want it to become an artistic expression in its own right.

In an interview with Commercial Integrator’s Dan Ferrisi, Jeremy Sternhagen, technical product manager at Planar, explains how the company’s three recently introduced LED lines deliver that kind of creative flexibility.

Planar on Creative Flexibility in Experiential Signage

The Planar Mosaic Series puts 250 mm x 250 mm modules into rectangular and square cabinets of different sizes. The cabinets rotate for horizontal or vertical installation, so they fit slim spaces between or over doorways, go around columns or form a design on a wall. Sternhagen expects the double-sided Chameleon Series to be popular for wayfinding and signage, possibly in airports and museums, and he notes it can also serve more artistic designs. The Tile Series comes in flat and flexible modules of different sizes, and its flexible modules can curve both concave and convex.

‘It Becomes Art’

Sternhagen describes the client for these products as someone who “wants the LED to stop being just a display, stop being just a big TV.” Instead, he says, “it becomes art.”

Planar is seeing a lot of large enterprise customers and public spaces, Sternhagen says, noting heavy investment being made in museums and airports. Sports venues are also working to make the experience feel more premium. “A bunch of TVs sprinkled around just isn’t cutting it for a lot of these places,” he says.

And because the products are flexible in both configuration and brightness, Sternhagen sees them as tools for turning LED into part of the architecture. “LED is not just a big display anymore,” he declares. “It’s part of the lighting design. It’s part of the environment.”

The conversation also covers how content and display can interact to create a more immersive experience. Sternhagen adds that Planar is excited to see what its integrator partners come up with.
