Industry Soapbox: Don’t Take Your Career For Granted

Published: 2015-02-16

NSCA will bring its Business and Leadership Conference to Tampa, Fla., for the 17th edition of one of the systems integration industry’s most highly regarded gatherings.

The event boasted its highest attendance last year with more than 300 people heading to Dallas for three days of business advice, frank discussions and sharing of information that’s unique to this show, and organizers expect a similar crowd to gather in Florida from Feb. 26-28.

We asked some people who have been to the BLC in the past and will be there for this year’s edition what they’d tell the audience if they got five minutes, an open mic and a soapbox. The results were fun, interesting and instructive. Enjoy!

Brock McGinnis, Sales Manager, Audio & Visual Solutions Division Westbury National Show Systems Ltd. says…

“Lighten up out there! Quit spending half your waking hours and the vast majority of your energy bitching about your competitors, your vendors, your staff, consultants, general contractors and/or the government.

“Every business and every job on the planet is ‘hard,’ but most aren’t anywhere near as ‘cool’ as yours. Chances are, if you weren’t doing this for a living, you’d be doing it as a hobby!

“Look at the bright side! You’ll never get bored in your job because you literally have to learn something new every day. And not a day goes by that you don’t have a chance to help someone make meaningful improvements to their business or communication processes.

“So what if you don’t get paid as much as you used to for selling projectors in a box? Think how the poor Texas and North Dakota oil millionaires feel with the price per barrel dropping below $75. They were all billionaires a few months ago.”
