Western Digital (WD) is one of the leading manufacturers of hard drive and other storage solutions for the commercial and residential markets, and not too long ago it announced a line of hard drives specifically for the security industry.

The Skinny: Bolstering its commitment to the security industry, the Irvine,Calif.-based storage company has announced a new partnership with security systems manufacturer Smartvue.

The Specs: The newly formed partnership brings together WD’s My Cloud EX2 and My Cloud EX4 multi-bay network attached storage (NAS) products and Smartvue’s surveillance software (expected to launch this October) to enable security system users to remotely video monitor and manage IP cameras.

“Our expert series of My Cloud products provide a great solution for creative professionals, prosumers and small businesses to save, share, backup, stream and manage their growing libraries of digital data,” notes Jim Welsh, executive vice president, WD Content Solutions Business and worldwide sales, Western Digital. “Surveillance is a growing uses case for many of our customers and the Smartvue integration makes it easy to record, manage and access critical surveillance video.”

The Smartvue app is available for iOS and Android, and allows for viewing and management of video content as well as alerts, motion detection, recording schedules and other activities.

Pricing for the products vary depending on features. The My Cloud Expert Series of products work with a variety of operating systems from Microsoft and Apple, and the products are also compatible with DLNA devices.

Solutions: The My Cloud Expert line of surveillance products can be used by a range of businesses to record and monitor activity captured by IP cameras.
